Current Reading: The 4 Hour Work Week!!

4 Hour Work Week – Tim Ferris.

I’ve come across a rather interesting book just recently. I’m not all the way through it yet, although I don’t think its going to be long! If I can find time to read it that is!

So far it’s really made me think, what is rich?

Because everyone’s rich is different… or so it should be. Does it really matter about the 6 figure bank balance? or is it just the lifestyle we hoped for that we associate with that?

I think for me; I have spent a long time associating a great life with early retirement and large monetary values. But it’s not always the case.

What is the point in working 40 hours a week and living for 2 days where you spend one of them starting to relax and the other dreading the day after?

So when I think about it like that.  I’m already rich?. I don’t have a boss to answer to if I want a holiday or to check how much of my holiday allowance is remaining. No need to fret and worry about working hours. I certainly don’t have to work 40 hours a week! …and still I find myself in a position of well above the average income. To top it all off I enjoy doing this every day!

So it seems like I already am in a great position, although I think this last year has only really just been the start for me!

Nothing else to report other than the usual. It would be really good to hear some views on the above questions though? Is it why you’re interested in trading the sports markets?

I’ll update and talk about my thoughts on the book later next week as I’m having a busy one this week. It certainly makes for interesting reading. One of those books that could hold the power to change everything… Maybe.

  1. Hey Caan,

I read that a while back really does make you rethink a lot of things. One thing that stuck out to me was wasting time the 80/20 rule.
I guess the whole point of the book is do what you like doing if that’s trading then your already living the four hour work week.

Not sure if you remember me from your online course but i’m back on betfair trading as of two weeks ago since some Aussie tracks are back on the cards :).

    Enjoy your mini retirements :).

  2. Totally agree with your sentiments Caan. As you know, I have been fortunate enough to be out of the 9-5 rat race for 10 years now. My income is about a third of what is was back then, but every day is my own, apart from maybe 2-3 hours MAX of trading in the afternoon, 4-5 days a week. You have to analyse what is important to you in life and I just earn enough to pay the bills, really do not want for anymore. Could not be happier, even with a 6 figure bank balance and a Ferrari!! Certainly not interested in spending 8 hours a day trading staring at a computer screen to earn more money, to me that is not a lifestyle. May as well be in an office and earning the commensurate salary.

Your position is even stronger as you earn much more now than you did in your previous job, but never let this trading become your life, as it really is not that important. We are not brain surgeons out there saving lives, we are just pressing a few buttons and earning our daily bread!!!!

Take it easy, as I am sure you will. Long weekend here too on the sunny South Coast…well actually it is raining!!!!!! lol

    Cheers
    Steve

  3. Never heard about the book, but sounds great. I will give it a go on the weekend and i hope i will be in the future there where you at Caan. Thanks for all.

  4. Lol that boring old cunt can’t help himself and always has to stick his oar in to say how everything he does is better. He’s never had the balls to rely on his wits so just ignore him, as the stone roses once said

“Kiss me where the sun don’t shine
    The past was yours
    But the future’s mine
    You’re all out of time”

  5. Didn’t hear about the book before your blog, but I stopped working about 5 years ago and have just been bumming around mountain biking and skiing ever since.

You don’t really need much money if you don’t buy houses and shit you don’t need…

I have more spare money now than I did when I had a full time job in the Uk and no free time 🙂

    Started reading the book…

you don’t even need to be rich, just stop doing what society expects, it’s liberating and easy once you do it…

    1. Cran, best blog comment that I have seen in a long time. Says it all really mate. Superb! You take it easy and keep enjoying life!!

  6. I’d agree cran, it’s so easy to get stuck in that “keeping up with the Jones’s” mentality. Personally I couldn’t maintain that Cassini mentality of working a 40 hour week and then spending another 40 hours or so compiling blogs or tips to sell etc. Good luck to him but I’m not sure what dream he’s chasing, eventually you come to realise most of us already have pretty much what we need.
