There has been a lot of speculation surrounding current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and his future at the club. This comes after a disappointing season, and on the back of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover, there’s a chance United will turn to a new man to lead them forward. But who would be in the running if that’s the case?
Thomas Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel, 50, is a German manager who has led some of the powerhouses of world football. He’s managed the likes of Borussia Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea. He’s currently in charge of Bayern Munich but will part ways with the German giants this summer, which means United would be able to make a play for the man who led Chelsea to Champions League success. Tuchel has recently spoken of his willingness to return to the Premier League, and sports betting markets online have him as the firm favourite to take over at Old Trafford. It would also be a great chance for Tuchel to show Chelsea that they were wrong to dismiss him when they did.
Gareth Southgate
Gareth Southgate, as a club manager, didn’t impress. And nobody would have ever thought he’d be a name linked with the manager’s job at Manchester United. However, after the fifty-three-year-old excelled as the England U21 manager, he’s impressed further since taking over as the England first team manager, guiding The Three Lions to the European Championships final several years ago. Southgate will lead England into Euro 2024 this summer, but with Dan Ashworth due to begin work at Old Trafford, Southgate could get the call to return to club football because of his relationship with him.
Graham Potter
Graham Potter, 48, had a quick rise to the top after a highly successful spell managing Ostersund in Sweden for six seasons. Swansea hired Potter, who then stepped up to Premier League Brighton before a move to Chelsea transpired. Things didn’t go great for Potter at Stamford Bridge, but he’s still highly regarded and has recently turned down offers to get back into the game, with Ajax, one of the clubs, keen to acquire his services. Potter would be a good fit for Manchester United after the recently hired Jason Wilcox stated that there’s a desire for possession-based football, something the Solihull-born former defender can deliver.
Roberto De Zerbi
When Potter left Brighton for Chelsea, The Seagulls moved quickly to bring in Roberto De Zerbi, a manager they’d admired from afar for a good while. The forty-four-year-old Italian promptly impressed and took the club forward in his first season at the Amex. Brighton qualified for Europe, and the football they were playing was being praised in all quarters. This has led to speculation about De Zerbi’s future, with the manager himself not closing down rumours he could leave the club this summer. He’s been linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich, so the suggestion Manchester United could run the rule over him isn’t out of the question.
