Racing Coverage, How Useful Is It?
Very useful, but only if it’s used right…
99% of ATR and RUK subscribers won’t even realise, which is useful for us… we get to pick up their money left on the table.
Over the years many have asked me if a subscription to the two channels is worth it? Of course, I get my money back and more every day.
Here’s how:
Betting’s for mugs and trading’s for winners, we all know this. You can’t be right all the time, so why even try?
Half the joy of trading bets is being right a bit of the time, for a short while, and still making a pile of cash in the process… so why on earth would you begrudge a subscription to either of the channels?
Lets face it, they both more or less tell you what’s about to happen in the betting market, even if its for the short-term. The cost? £20 a month, maximum.
Example:
- Horse refuses to start in a jumps race – If the jockey is still on the horses back when they start, all bets stand. Yep, fastest finger first, free money.
- Trainer interview – describes his horse as a donkey, ‘just looking to get a run in’ he says. Price spirals out of control (Read this post after)
- Race is delayed – completely changes the betting market
If them 3 points aren’t enough for you…. Watch this YouTube video of the Back to Lay Strategy I tweet about occasionally.
If you’re still sceptical, there is a cheaper option. Betfair Live Video – Although this can bring additional problems.
Coverage is often very late on with Betfair Live Video, meaning you won’t catch that trainner’s interview. When a horse breaks loose too, you won’t see it until after. Occasionally it doesn’t load until a minute or so before the race, which isn’t ideal. But it’s an alternative to nothing (you need to match £5 on the betting market to view).
As far as quality goes, Channel 4 coverage always wins. Depending on the edge you’re working in the market, it may be different. As the saying goes; there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Betfair traders from abroad don’t have the luxury of Channel 4 due to restrictions. If a follower should know a way around this, please let me know and pass it on for others.
Of the two channels mentioned;
I personally prefer RUK. Why? For a start you don’t have to keep watching that poxy advert with Micheal Parkinson trying to sell life insurance, even with the bargain offer of a free pen. Do old people like pens that much?
As much as I love Matt Chapman and his high-energy hot air, the RUK lot actually throw in a few extra pointers too. I mean in terms of market influence, it’s not something to live and die by, but it keeps me more engaged.
Here are a few pro’s and con’s if you’re thinking about investing…
At The Races (aka At The Adverts)
Pros:
- Free with the standard sky package.
- Covers the majority of races.
- More coverage than Betfair’s Live Feed.
- Can be fairly entertaining, which is good when you’re sat looking at numbers all day.
Cons:
- Adverts take priority, sometimes running close to post time – Within days you’ll know the words to Wonga.com’s advert.
- Delayed coverage, can be up to 6 or 7 seconds.
- Most of the presenters don’t offer much value.
Racing UK
Pros:
- Better quality coverage (adverts seem to be increasing though).
- Generally more viewing and build-up to a race than anywhere else.
- Some interesting characters on the panel occasionally – Dave Nevison, Eddie Freemantle, Dave Yates.
- They give out badges for members (where’s ya pen now Parkinson).
- Delay is rarely more than 2 seconds.
Cons:
- Dearer subscription, truly horrendous customer service if there’s a problem.
- They refuse to read out email questions about Betfairs Premium Charge, it makes the producer angry.
- Unlike ATR, they don’t often have fit women on the show
Joking aside, if you don’t get some form of live coverage I think you’re either mad or don’t want to make money from Betfair.
Obviously the two channels are there to entertain the masses, so it’s important to remember that. They both certainly bring some value to trading the markets though, and occasionally (most days) throw up at least one opportunity to pay the monthly subscription.

I signed up to Racing UK a couple of weeks ago. I managed to find a discount code/voucher. £10 a month for 12 months. RUK has helped my with my knowledge of horse racing, trainers, jockeys and courses. The more I watch/listen the more I’m starting to realise that I’m genuinely interested in the sport. My interest isn’t in the gambling side of things, it’s more to do with the dedication of the trainers, jockeys, types of races and the tactics used in the racing itself. I never realised how much goes into just getting a horse ready for a race and it’s that, that has sparked my interest.
Hi Caan, I am just starting off and I am quite happy with the Betfair live video for Racing UK for now because you get the full 5 minutes coverage before the off, plus there seems to be very little delay which is all I need for now. However the coverage Betfair show of At The Races don’t really have any commentary until about 30 seconds just before the horses race. Which sometimes means sitting and watching the horses with no sound for 5-6 minutes! The delay isn’t too bad, but I wondered as this article was written over 2 years ago is the delay for At The Races online streaming still delayed 6-7 seconds or is it the same as the Betfair live video but with all the commentary (and ads!)? If you could compare the 2 live feeds for me I would be grateful! Thanks, Dave
Having tried both Racing Uk & ATR this past month, I would say neither is worth it. Racing UK feedis around 6 – 8 seconds behind the Betfair feed. ATR is even worse at up to 10 – 12 seconds behind the Betfair feed. This makes it hard to use for trading, especially if you’re watching for the start of a race. You can’t even try these services out because they hook you in for a 12 month subscription and get the debt collectors in quickly if you miss any payments. I’d avoid both like the plague and stick to the Betfair feed.
