Trading on Betfair full-time can be pretty amazing, especially if you’ve just left the constraints of a 9-5 job.
However, it can become a bit lonely and monotonous after a while. I’ve posted previously about the importance of having a routine, something I’ve experimented with over time. Early on, I loved the idea of not having to get up early, not having to answer to anyone, and not having to do as I’m told. And I still enjoy that to some degree! But these days, that doesn’t mean partying all the time and rolling out of bed at noon to watch flashing numbers.
I’ve tried several different routines for various reasons, and it’s been quite enjoyable—a journey of self-discovery, really. Recently, though, I’ve settled into a new routine that I think will be here to stay for the long run.
My Day Now:
I now get up much earlier, usually between 6:30 and 7:00, and head to the gym. After an hour of working out, swimming, steam room, and hot tub, I’m back home revitalised and raring to go—all by 9:00. It feels great! From there, it’s breakfast time, followed by a deep dive into the day’s cards and stats.
Whatever I set out to do, even if it takes a huge amount of time, blood, sweat, and tears, I eventually succeed. So, it’s always good to set new challenges. Trading from home, without a boss, has led to me putting on a bit of extra weight over the past couple of years (I can “pinch an inch” now). It’s not something I’ve had an issue with before, and it’s not a big problem now, but I don’t like it. So, I’m setting myself a new challenge—to get fit again!
With the routine I’ve started over the last couple of weeks, it shouldn’t be too difficult. But like any good round of goal-setting, I’ll need to know when I’ve achieved what I set out to do and have a deadline. I’m giving myself three months to reduce my body fat to less than 10%. I’m currently around 20%, so it won’t be a walk in the park, but if it’s easy, it’s not worth doing, right? In the meantime, I’m looking to bulk up a little as well. Will I manage it? I guess I’ll let you know in a few months!
In the meantime, I’m convinced this routine is helping my trading mindset—something that I and others have emphasized for a long time. Physical fitness definitely has an impact on trading state of mind, in my opinion. If you ever check out Dave’s blog (another in-play trader), you’ll see that’s something he likes to keep an eye on as well!

Hiya Caan,
I’m still chasing the dream, making a bit, losing a lot, but still hanging in there. I searched the internet last week for people, like yourself who make a living out of trading and found one or two who feel sort of trapped now. They have been doing this for a number of years, but feel as the though they are losing touch with the ‘real’ world and are definitely losing touch with the job market, should they decide to go back to a more conventional life. So your blog is pretty inspiring in that sense too mate. You still try to keep it normal.
