All sports bettors with serious aspirations need to understand the logic within
Monte Carlo Or Bust: Simple Simulations for Aspiring Sports Bettors
Overall rating: 10/10
Verdict:
This is an extremely detailed and thorough book, put together in a thoughtful and amusing way. All sports bettors with serious aspirations need to understand the logic within. Joseph Buchdahl has done a great job of explaining a range dry and analytical topics in a colourful way. There’s a mixture of thought-provoking stories and historical data that assist the reader on a journey of logical understanding.
Aimed at aspiring sports bettors, I’m can recommend this book for the people who are serious about finding an edge.
A vast amount of academic research and data is shared in the book and it may feel ‘heavy’ at times for beginners, although it’s totally necessary. Topics such as; probability, statistics, Monte Carlo simulations, predictions models, staking and tipping are all covered in great depth. Human psychology and behavioural biases are shared throughout.
If I were starting out in the world of sports betting again, this would be an extremely useful aid…
Toward the end of the book, there are some useful references and musings about the betting industry, stake restrictions and Football Index.
This book will not offer you a profitable strategy, it’ll do far more, showing you the correct way to approach probability and data.

Joseph Buchdahl is a graduate of Cambridge University and a former data scientist. His attention turned to betting analysis 20 years ago after running bets for Patrick Veitch, a mathematician and horse racing gambler. He has also written many informative articles on pinnacle.com, one of the world’s sharpest sportsbooks. I’d recommend reading those too!
