Recently, several people have asked if I trade in the US horse racing markets on Betfair. To put it simply, I no longer engage in trading US races. While I don’t want to sound dismissive, it simply isn’t as profitable for me as focusing my efforts on the UK racing markets, where there is greater liquidity and potential for larger profits. However, I would encourage anyone interested to give it a try, especially those in the early stages of learning to trade on Betfair.
US races generally have lower liquidity, but it’s still possible to make some profit, particularly in higher-quality races which attract more betting activity. Interestingly, a member of the GeeksToy forum recently shared that they make a living trading greyhounds. If successful trading can happen in greyhound markets, then the US racing markets certainly hold potential too.
For beginners, the market principles between US and UK races are similar, making US races a good training ground for those looking to practice their skills after work. One major caution is the risk of getting caught in-play due to unexpected race starts. My straightforward advice is to avoid this at all costs. Patience is crucial, and navigating these markets can significantly improve your discipline in trading.
I’ve included a clip below that might be helpful if you’re considering diving into US markets, or if you’ve tried before but struggled with the timing of races.

Good vid. Will keep the info in mind when trading the Australian horse racing markets. Any chance of an Aussie racing video? Cheers.
Hey Alan, the Australian ones are past my bedtime too 😉 I’ve dabbled even less with them in the past although i’d say they are pretty similar to the US racing!! Im not so sure about the delays etc though.
