Ever tried doubling down after a win? That’s the heart of the Paroli betting strategy.
It’s a system praised by beginners but often misunderstood. Let’s break it down honestly…
What really sets this system apart? You’re doubling down when you win (not when you lose). It’s a refreshing change.
Compared to other strategies, it’s logical, easy to manage, and doesn’t force you to commit to huge bets. So today, we’ll break down how the Paroli system works along with the pros and cons so you can decide if it’s worth a shot yourself.
What Is the Paroli Betting System?
Essentially, the Paroli system is a positive progression strategy. That’s just a fancy way of saying you increase your bets after a win and set them back to their starting amount after a loss or a third consecutive win. Think of it as a controlled method for taking advantage of winning streaks.
The name “Paroli” supposedly comes from the Latin word “par,” meaning “equal,” and has been linked to the 16th-century Italian card game Basset. History aside, I like how simple the Paroli strategy is. Clearly, it’s one of the reasons beginners (and even more experienced bettors) love it. Who wants to overcomplicate things?
Here’s how it plays out with real numbers:
- Start with a base bet, say £10.
- If you win the first bet, double it to £20.
- Win again? Move to £40.
- Manage three wins in a row? You’re done. Reset to £10 and start again.
- Lose at any point? Back to £10.
The idea is that you don’t risk more than the system dictates, and if you hit a streak, you can make solid profits without exposing your bankroll to big losses. It is basically a reverse martingale system with a cap on winnings.

Example of using the Paroli Betting System:
Let’s look at the ideal scenario you could hope for when using the Paroli betting system. Let’s say we start off with a £20 stake playing roulette always betting on black.
| Bet | Stake | Result | Return | Overall Profit |
| Black | £20 | Win | £40 | £20 |
| Black | £40 | Win | £80 | £60 |
| Black | £80 | Win | £160 | £140 |
In the best-case scenario a profit of £140 would be made from three winning bets. The worst case scenario would be never be able to bank any profit in the long run of bets as the second or third bet continually loses, which will happen over big samples sizes.
| Bet | Stake | Result | Return | Overall Profit |
| Black | £20 | Win | £40 | £20 |
| Black | £40 | Lose | £0 | -£20 |
| Black | £20 | Win | £40 | £0 |
| Black | £40 | Lose | £0 | -£20 |
| Black | £20 | Lose | £0 | -£40 |
This trend of results go on for a very long period of time!
How Does Paroli Work in the Casino?
The Paroli system is often used for games with even-money odds (or something close to it). The classics like roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and craps are the go to options here.
When playing roulette, applying the Paroli system to even-money bets like red/black or odd/even feels like the most natural fit. You’re essentially betting that you’ll catch a good streak, doubling up on wins, and cutting your losses quickly. The house edge, however, does factor in (thanks to the zero or double zero), so you’ll want to go in with realistic expectations. This is not a strategy that gives the player a mathematical edge unlike other casino strategies we have covered.
Blackjack
While you can use Paroli in blackjack, keep in mind that it doesn’t mesh well with advanced tactics like splitting or doubling down. It’s more suited to beginner players sticking to flat betting strategies. Be mindful of table limits, though, or you might hit a ceiling before cashing in on a streak.
Baccarat
The Paroli system works particularly well in baccarat, especially since the odds on player or banker bets are so favourable. This is where you are likely to find the most consistent results when sticking closely to the rules. The low house edge gives you more room to breathe compared to other casino games.
Craps
For craps fans, Paroli can be applied to bets like pass/don’t pass. The dynamic nature of craps adds an extra layer of excitement, but the basic concept stays the same. It’s all about managing those streaks while keeping your bets controlled.
Can You Use Paroli for Sports Betting?
Sports betting adds a different layer of complexity. Odds can vary depending on the market, so sticking to bets around the 50/50 mark is crucial. Over/under bets or point spreads in sports like basketball or football are where Paroli fits best. For example, you could look at using the strategy on the Asian handicap markets where the odds are always close to even money.

One thing I’ve learned while using this system in sports betting is to stay disciplined. It’s all too easy to get carried away chasing big odds, but that defeats the purpose of Paroli. Proper research and maintaining balance are critical here.
Pros and Cons of The Paroli Betting Strategy
No betting strategy is perfect, and the Paroli system is no exception. From personal experience, here’s a quick breakdown.
Advantages
- Easy to Use: Even if you’ve never tried a betting system before, Paroli is simple to grasp.
- Risk Control: You’re not chasing losses and risking huge sums, unlike other betting strategies Paroli has a limited amount you can lose/
- Bankroll Friendly: Ideal for smaller stakes, making it accessible to casual bettors.
- Capitalises on Wins: When the winning streak comes, they’re more impactful.
Disadvantages
- Requires Streaks: The system’s success hinges on hitting consecutive wins, wins and losses are random. Long losing streaks will happen.
- Doesn’t Beat the House Edge: Let’s be real, unless you have a genuine edge, no system wins long term. Paroli included.
- Tedium: The repetitive nature of sticking to 50/50 bets can feel a bit dull over time.
Is Paroli Worth Trying?
The best way to use the Paroli betting strategy is if you are going to a casino and betting on games recreationally with the knowledge that you are not beating the house edge. If you are looking to actually make money playing casino games, there are much better casino strategies to use. When it comes to sports betting I have similar thoughts, there is no real reason to use this system other then for fun. If you have a value-based system that wins money long term then the Paroli betting system is not going to be better then a flat staking method. In fact it will only increase the variance!
For those of you who’ve used (or are thinking of using) the Paroli system, drop a comment below and share your experiences. I’m always keen to hear how different bettors approach strategies like this one!
